Archaeological description
Auction Leu 2021: Seleukid Kings of Syria. Antiochos VIII Epiphanes (Grypos), 121/0-97/6 BC. Weight of 1 Mina (Lead, 92x98 mm, 686.00 g), Satyros, agoranomos, SE 200 = 113/2 BC. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ AИ/TIOXOY - ΦΙΛOMH/TOPOΣ ETOYΣ / Σ - MИA / AΓOPAИOMOИ/TOΣ ΣATYPOY Seleukid anchor. Rev. Latticework design. Unpublished and of great interest. Holed and with some scuffs, otherwise, very fine. The reading of the date on this important royal weight is not entirely certain, but a plain 200 = 113/2 BC seems the most likely. The curious lead peace attached to the reverse was perhaps added later to adjust the weight to a modification in the weight standard.
