Archaeological description
Glass weight. Disc. Colour (Farbe): hellgrün. Iconography: No cross. No wreath.
CPAI III/2: End of the 6th - 7th century AD. Eastern Mediterranean. Weight for a gold coin (solidus). Glass, 25 x 5 mm; 4.35 g. Inv. no. PMA 2855. Acquired in 2007. Description: Pale-green coloured translucent glass with a central impression. The block monogram is composed of the letters MΔ. in the centre, E on the right and V and Θ at the top. The monogram can be read as ΜΕΘΟΔΙΟV.
The weight of 23 carat could indicate that it was produced not before the reign of Mauricius Tiberius who introduced the new nominal in the middle of the 580s. However, coins with this mass are also already known from the time of Justinian I.
