Archaeological description
Glass weight. Disc. Colour (Farbe): dunkelgelb. Iconography: No cross. Wreath: line.
CPAI III/2: Middle of the 6th - 7th century AD. Eastern Mediterranean. Weight for a gold coin (solidus/22 carat). Glass, 25 x 4.5 mm; 4.00 g. Inv. no. PMA 1539. Acquired in 2006. Description: Dark-yellow coloured round weight with a central impression. Within a circle, the cruciform monogram is composed of the letters N on the left, A at the bottom, Λ on the right, and  at the top. The monogram can likely be resolved as IOVΛIAN, however, other resolutions like ANANl or ANIAN are possible, too. A monogram in this from is preserved on a lead seal in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection in Washington. Two urban prefects of Constantinople are mentioned with the name loulianos: one in 565-566 and one in 580. A Praetorian prefect with this name is known from 530-531. The urban prefect from 565-566 can be identified by means of the monogram on silverware from the end of Justinian's reign. His cruciform monogram differs from the glass weights by the letters N and Λ on the crossbar, which are on opposite sides. Therefore, it is not likely to associate the glass weights with this prefect.
