Archaeological description
Glass weight. Disc. Colour (Farbe): dunkelblau. Iconography: No cross. No wreath. One imperial bust.
CPAI III/2: 7th century AD. Eastern Mediterranean. Weight for a gold coin (tremissis). Glass, 16.5 x 3 mm; 1.40 g. Inv. no. PMA 1536. Acquired in 2006. Description: Dark-blue coloured round weight with a central impression of an anonymous dignitary. Quite a large number of such weights are known, with slightly different portraits. Marcel Jungfleisch and Paul Balog stated that these weights, which they collected mainly from Egypt, belong to the transformation period from the Byzantine Empire to the early Islamic State. A more recently found weight from Monastiraki Katalimata can be dated to the middle and the second half of the 7th century. It shows that these weights were used in the Byzantine Empire, too.
