Archaeological description
Empereur 1981: Plaque rectangulaire en plomb, opisthographe. Longueur : 69 mm en haut, 67 [mm] en bas ; largeur : 62 mm ; au centre avec le sceau : 64 mm ; épaisseur : 7 mm. Sur la face supérieure, un cadre en assez fort relief de section triangulaire, interrompu en haut, au centre, par un sceau. Dans le cadre, une inscription (hauteur des lettres : 10–11 mm) : Ἡμί|λει|τρον. Le sceau porte un symbole au centre et une inscription sur le pourtour : le symbole, complexe, se compose d’une coquille d’escargot d’où sort une tête d’oiseau à fort bec ; devant l’oiseau, une souris ; devant sa gueule, un grain de blé ; enfin, entre le quadrupède et la coquille, un soleil radié. L’inscription se lit (hauteur des lettres : 1–1,5 mm ; par deux fois. un point en haut en signe d’abréviation) : Ἀντωνίου Βάρου‹ν› φιλοσεβ(άστου) · ἀγο(ρανόμου) ·. Au revers, une autre inscription (hauteur des lettres : 10–11 mm) : Ἀν[τω]νίο|υ Βάρου φ|ιλοσεβ|άστου | ἀγορα|νόμ(ου).
SEG XXXI: Ephesos. Inscription on a lead weight, 3rd c. A.D. Rectangular lead weight (158 g). Inscriptions on both sides. On the front side (A) inscription in a recessed panel, interrupted in the centre of the upper part by a circular seal impression. Inscription (B) on this seal around a symbolon: snail-shell with bird’s head, mouse with grain of corn; between these two representations a sun with rays (?). On the reverse another inscription (C).
Autoptic examination: Lead weight, square shape. Signs of wear and corrosion: chippings; small strokes on the edges and the reverse; whitish. Very slightly raised and rounded corners; the sides are set at slant. On the obverse, high frame and letters in relief: HMI ΛΕΙ· ΤΡΟΝ. On the reverse, letters in relief (slighlty erased): ΑΝ[ΤΩ]ΝΙΟ ΥΒΑΡΟΥΦ ΙΛΟCΕΒ ΑCΤΟΥ ΑΓΟΡΑ ΝΟΜ. On the upper edge on the reverse, large round countermark with a snail shell, a bird, a little sun, a mouse and an ear of wheat. Around, small letters in relief: ·Ạ[NT]ΩΝ̣Ι̣ΟΥ·ΒΑΡΟΥΝ·ΦΙΛΟCΕΒ·ΑΓΟ.
