Archaeological description
CPAI Turkey 1: The weight is a flattened sphere doubly truncated in form; centering points on the top and bottom; top, bottom and body are blank or illegible. Corroded and pitted. The attribution to a Roman weight is not certain since it doesn't bear any mark on it; it is difficult to determine whether it is a Roman uncia or an Islamic 10 dirham weight. But its spherical form without carinate on the profile body and centrings points give an impression that it may be a Byzantine uncia. A weight similar in form (perhaps two-nomismata) was found at the excavations at Corinth.
Cf. Davidson 1952, n°1584 (Roman); Isler 1998, n° 25 (Islamic).
