Archaeological description
It could be the coat of arms of Catania, and the A is an abbreviation of Saint Agatha, the city's patron saint, and the elephant has been closely linked to the city of Catania since at least the tenth century. The coat of arms was probably adopted around 1239, which is therefore a terminus post quem for the object.
