Additional comment
The object was part of the collection of the Baron Astuto di Noto which was gathered in the second half of the 18th century and purchased by Mr. Giuseppe La Barbera, an antiquity trader from Palermo, in 1858. Later the same year the collection was purchased by the Archaeological Museum and transferred to the museum in 1861.
The documentation concerning the acquisition of the Astuto Collection is conserved in the file no. 405 of the historical archives of the museum. Here is an old handwritten note which reads: “Peso in piombo marcato con Trinacria e corrispondente a 3:grani d’oncia” (lead weight, marked with Trinacria and equivalent to 3 grains of an ounce).
