Archaeological description
Tekin 2014b : This lead weight square in form measures 35 x 37 x 8 mm and weighs 85.5 g. On the face, there is a caduceus and letters Α Σ, all in relief ; the bottom is blank. It may belong to one of the cities in the Troad, Northern Mysia or Thracian Chersonesus assuming that it was found somewhere near to the museum. If a griffin instead of caduceus was depicted with the letters Α Σ, then it would be easy to attribute it to Assus ; but in this case the attribution remains open. Since Hermes (i.e. Agoraios) is the patron god of commerce and traders, he and his symbols are depicted frequently on weights. Its mass corresponds to a hektemorion, i.e. one-sixth of a mna (mna of 513 g).
