Archaeological description
Christian Byzantine weight in bronze; circular shape. The recto is decorated with a cross above the Greek letters Γ and Α, separated by a dot, indicating the denomination of one ounce. These elements are encircled by a herringbone wreath and an incised circle which run along the rim. The letters and part of the cross formerly presented inlays, now lost. The verso is plain, with a circle engraved along the circumference and a dot incised in the centre. The object shows little sign of wear, with only minor deformations along part of the rim. The latter is raised and decorated with two grooves. There is some brown darken patina on both sides, particularly on the engravings.

Additional comment
According to a handwritten note of the collector, Dr. Lillian Malcove, the weight was donated to her as a gift by Zumpoulakis of Athens in 1959. The object was bequeathed to the Art Museum by Dr. Malcove in 1982.

Dr. Malcove also recorded that the letters and cross on the recto presented silver inlays.
