Archaeological description
Circular lead weight measuring 52x50x11 mm and weighing 212,2 grammes ; little worn and corroded. The obverse is slightly convex, with raised edges and a scratched H in the iddel. The reverse has slightly raised borders and a big bump on the inferior part. The borders are irregular, with strokes and little bumps.
Robinson 1941: Inv. 31.126. Lead weight. Dm. 0.05 m to 0.052 m, Th. 0.011 m. to 0.013 m., Weight 212 grammes. Roughly circular. On the obverse is a concave depression inside border with rounded edges. The reverse is slightly convex, swelling out from a rugged border (0.002 m. to 0.004 m. wide). In the center of the obverse is the letter Η, cut in deep irregular lines, 0.033 m. high. On the reverse is a triangular gouge, 0.011 m. high, 0.009 m. wide at the base. H should stand for ἑκατόν but the weight indicates half a mina, which ought to weigh only 50 drachmae. So Η probably is an abbreviation for ἡμιμναῖον and we have a half-mina here, making a mina standard of 424 grammes. Possibly Η might stand for ἑκτον or ἑκτημόριον, since 212 grammes is about one-sixth of the πέλεκυς or three mina standard as indicated by nos. 2382–2384 [Robinson 1941].
