RIB II: The figure VIII is deeply incised but the letter G or C above is smaller and more shallow, and may be secondary. As the object is only 1.41 gm (0.64%) above the weight of the bes of eight unciae, it may be accepted with slight reserve as a Roman weight. We must note Haverfield’s reminder (EE ix p. 654) that the formula of an alphabetic letter above Roman numerals occurred on turnpike tickets of the 17th century; but these were on pottery and not on a heavy roundel of lead.
