Archaeological description
Auction Leu 2020: Lot 2020. Leo I, 457-474. Exagium Solidi (Bronze, 16x17 mm, 4.28 g, 6 h), Thessalonica (?). Crowned, diademed and draped facing bust of Leo I. Rev. Monogram of Leo I (LEONIS). Bendall 16 (same dies). CPAI -. MAH -. Pondera 11040. Very rare and in exceptional condition. A perfectly struck and beautifully preserved example. Somewhat cleaned, otherwise, extremely fine. Bendall notes that this form of Leo's monogram, with the E to the left, is otherwise only found on coins from Thessalonica, which lead him to believe that this is were the exagia solidi were produced.
