Archaeological description
CPAI II : Shell-shaped, bronze cast; bottom is flat; corroded. Thse kind of so-called weights ranges from the 4th century BC through the Roman Imperial Period. Thirtyone shells of this kind from Modena and eighty from Caesarea Maritima range in fact in a quite different dimensions and masses supporting that they may not be weights. Although the mass of our specimen corresponds to one uncia in Roman system, the so-called shell shaped "weights" were not intended to be produced as weights but some may have been used as weights if their masses correspond to any unit.
