Archaeological description
Kushnir-Stein 2002: Square lead weight, with a horizontally elongated loop on its lower side and a handle on its upper side. Both the loop and the handle are now bent towards the side bearing an inscription. On the reverse are traces of the Phoenician mem, written retrograde within a circle.
Auction Archaeological Center 2007: Palestine, Gaza. A Roman Period square lead weight with raised border and two handles (which are bent toward the obverse). 83.95 gr., 4.5×4.5 cm., 0.5 cm. thick. The Greek inscription reads: ΤΕΤΑΡ/ΤΟΝ “A fourth” which indicates the weight. In the lower middle field there is a rectangular upside-down countermark bearing four Greek letters: ΕΙΡΗ, which seem to be an abbreviation of an official’s name. On the reverse there is a Phoenician letter mem in mirror-shape, damaged bυ the counter mark and by corrosion. The weight is in very good condition and rare. (A. Spaer coll. no. W- 52).
