Archaeological description
Ferencz 2018: Piece discovered accidentally at Ardeu few decades ago. Today it is part of the collections of the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization in Deva (Inv. No 52183). It is a “heart” shape lead weight used for the balance, made of by casting in a mould. The piece was subjected to a restoration process and it is well preserved. At the time of aquisition it weighed 478 g and after cleaning it fell to 460 g. But even in this way, traces that can be seen on the surface of the pond make us assume that initially it could have had a slightly larger mass, maybe around 480–490 g. Such a weight is close to that of the Attic mina, after Solon’s reforms (458,4 g) or the 5th-century Attic mina (480,2 g).
