Archaeological description
Ashmolean Museum: Lead weight.
Meyer 2001–03: Callatian weight of the autonomous period. Square lead weight, 63.02 gr., 4.3 x 3.24 x 0.87 cm. Obv. Herm or club placed vertically in the middle, with caduceus to the right. Edges folded in. Rev. ?]ΔΙ /ΟΓΔΟ. AN 2004.34. One-eighth mina. The top of the handle at the upper edge is missing and, apart from general signs of wear, there are two scuffmarks on the upper and lower right edge on either face. The combination of caduceus and herm, if the latter is not in fact a club, appears on a weight of Callatis of different shape and issued on a lighter weight standard.
Autoptic examination: Lead weight, square shape; square handle on the upper edge. Signs of wear and corrosion: bumps and hollows (corrosion); cuts on the reverse. The upper edge of the handle is a little bit folded. On the obverse, depiction in relief: Herm or club with caduceus to the right. On the reverse, legend in relief: [..]ΔΙ̣ ΟΓΔO.

Date of first acquisition
Dec. 31, 1996
circumstances
Meyer and Moreno 2004: In 1996 a private collector of ancient coins received a posted parcel containing 43 metal objects, supposedly lead weights from ancient Istria on the western shore of the Black Sea. These came unsolicited from an antiquities dealer based outside Britain, and given that they would otherwise most likely have been dispersed on the open market, the recipient notified the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and deposited the package at the Department of Antiquities.

Additional comment
Meyer 2001–03: The combination of caduceus and herm, if the latter is not in fact a club, appears on a weight of Callatis of different shape and issued on a lighter weight standard: Moisil 1957, 275, no. 22, pl. 4. 5 (82 gr.).
T. Gorytos) identifiziert.
