Archaeological description
Autoptic examination:
Roman bronze weight in the shape of a truncated sphere. The piece shows signs of wear and corrosion: there are some scratches, and the surface appears coarse and oxidized all over the body, with green patina. The lower base presents a dot, incised and encircled; this is located between two undistinguishable markings: they might have represented two letters (perhaps the monogram for the Greek diphthong ου - as in οὐγκία - and a Γ ?), but they now appear as irregular dents, due to corrosion. On the upper base, the numeral III is incised to indicate the denomination of the weight: it is a quadrans, corresponding to three ounces. The diameter of the sphere is 2.45 cm; the diameter of the upper base is 1.25 cm, and that of the lower base is 1.3 cm.
