Archaeological description
Glass weight. Disc. Colour (Farbe): dunkelgelb. Iconography: Cross in the inscription. Wreath: inscription. One imperial bust.
CPAI III/2: 1st half of the 6th century. AD Eastern Mediterranean. Weight for a silver coin (light siliqua) or a gold coin (tremissis). Glass, 26 x 5 mm; 4.05 g. Inv. no. PMA 2919. Acquired in 2007. Description: Dark-yellow coloured round weight with a central impression. The dignitary in the centre is holding a mappa in his raised right hand. To the left of his face is an equal-armed cross. An inscription is located around the bust: +EΠl IⲰANN EΠAPX. The dignitary can be identified as Ioannos "the Cappadocian" who was Praetorian prefect of Oriens from 532-541, including a short break in 532. The cross to the left of his head occurs on the follis of Justinian I from 538 on. Therefore, it is likely that the weight was produced between 538 and 541. Two variations with different legends are known. The present one belongs to the more common type.
