Archaeological description
Glass weight. Disc. Colour (Farbe): dunkelblau. Iconography: No cross. Wreath: inscription. One imperial bust.
CPAI III/2: Early 6th century AD? Eastern Mediterranean. Weight for a gold coin (solidus). Glass, 26 x 4.5 mm; 4.45 g. Inv. no. PMA 2862. Acquired in 2007. Description: Dark-blue coloured round weight with a central discoid impression. The dignitary in the centre is holding a mappa in his raised right hand. The remnant of the left arm indicates that it was raised, too, or primarily holding a sceptre. An inscription is located around the bust: f1HMOC8E:NIS. The dignitary may be identified with Flavius Theodorus Petrus Demosthenes who was Praetorian prefect of Oriens 521-522 and 529. His title indicates that he was also the urban prefect of Constantinople. Two different variations of glass weights from Demosthenes are known. The present weight belongs to the more common and frequently known type.
